History

While wolfberry (goji berry)  is only recently bring recognized as nutritional powerhouse in the Western world, it has a long history as a key to wellness in the eastern cultures.

In ancient times, the Himalayans region was a crossroads of the old spice routes between Europe and Asia. People from far-off lands would come to the Himalayans to share their discoveries and learn from the healers residing there. It is in the Himalayas where the first organized and codified medical system came about. Mostly, they wrote about the medical properties of the plants found in their lofty mountain home. And they praised no plant more highly than the goji berry.

Just as there are many varieties of grapes for wine making, there are many varieties of goji—as many as 41 species growing in Tibet alone!

Dr. Mindell knew that he must exhaustively analyze the dozens of varieties to find the one true goji—the one that had been discovered by the early Himalayan healers, and which, from ancient times, had been praised in legend.

In the same way that human fingerprints can be used to distinguish one person from all others on the planet, a spectrometer can detect even subtle differences between berries at the molecular level. This technique results in the generation of a graph, a unique fingerprint for whatever is being tested—a Spectral Signature.

Benefits

Goji contains the richest source of bioactive polysaccharides in the world, including four unique polysaccharides that are more powerful than any others that have been found in any plant on the planet. Research strongly suggests that wolfberry’s unique bioactive polysaccharides, again sometime referred to as glyconutrients, work in the body by serving as directors and carriers of the instructions the cells use to communicate, These ‘master’ molecules command and control many of the body’s most important biochemical defense systems and balance your body’s chemistry.

Wolfberry also acts to cause the secretion of GH factor, or growth hormone, from the pituitary gland. This is the youth hormone and can decrease body fat, reduce wrinkles, restore hair loss, increase energy, increase sexual function, improve memory, improve sleep, elevate mood, normalize blood pressure and improve blood sugar and insulin levels.

Reasons to consume wolfberry

Increase longevity

The body’s 10 trillion cells are under constant attack by free radicals. These harmful environmental agents can accelerate aging by destroying vital body cells faster than they can be replaced. Goji is known as the ‘longevity fruit’. Its unique master molecule polysaccharides and powerful antioxidants defend against premature aging, fighting free radical damage throughout the body.

Increase energy and strength

Ranked as one of Asia’s premier adaptogens, goji increases exercise tolerance, stamina and endurance. It helps to eliminate fatigue, especially when recovering from illness.

Maintain healthy blood pressure

Nearly one of four U.S. adults has high blood pressure (hypertension). Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure or kidney failure. This is why high blood pressure is often called ‘silent killer’. A 1998 research study showed that increased blood pressure could be prevented significantly by wolfberry’s master molecule polysacchirides.

Maintain healthy cholesterol levels

Wolfberry’s antioxidants keep cholesterol from oxidizing and forming arterial plaques. The flavanoids in wolfberry help to keep arteries open and functioning smoothly.

Enhance sexual function

The wolfbery is revered as one of the premier sexual tonic herbs in all of Asian medicine and is legendary for helping spark the passion. In fact, an old Chinese proverb cautions men who are traveling far from their wives and families: ‘He who travels 1,000 kilometers from home should not eat goji!’. Modern scientific studies have shown that wolfberry markedly increases testosterone in the blood, thereby increasing libido in both men and women.

Help lose weight

In an Asian anti-obesity study, patients were given wolfberries each morning and each afternoon. Results were excellent, with most patients losing significant weight. In another study, goji polysaccharides were shown to reduce body weight by enhancing the conversion of food into energy instead of fat.

Improve quality of sleep

Wolfberry has enjoyed long use throughout Asia in the natural treatment of insomnia. In several medical study groups with elderly people, nearly all patients taking goji reported better quality of sleep.

Improve vision

Modern Chinese scientists found that goji is able to reduce the time it takes for vision to adapt to darkness. It also improves vision under subdued light. Blind spots were reduced in patients taking goji. It is powerful antioxidant carotenoids may also protect against macular degeneration and cataracts.

Strengthen the immune system

The immune system is your body’s armed forces. More than 40 years of research have revealed goji’s ability to regulate immunity by commanding and controlling many of the body’s important defense functions. Wolfberry polysaccharides enhance and balance the activity of all classes of immune cells, including T-cells, cytotoxic T-cells, NK cells, lysozyme, tumor necrosis factor-alpha and the immunoglobulins IgG and IgA and interleukin-2(IL-2).

Protect the DNA

DNA is the most important chemical in your body, ensuring that—as they need replacement---your 10 trillion cells are faithfully reproduced as healthy, exact duplicates. Exposure to chemicals, pollutants, and free radicals can cause DNA damage and breakage, leading to genetic mutations, abnormal growth cell and even death. Wolfberry’s betaine and master molecule polysaccarides can restore and repair damaged DNA.

Inhibit tumor growth

Interleuken-2 (IL-2) is a crucial cytokine (cell protein) that induces potent anti-tumor responses in a variety of cancers. Wolfberry polysaccharides have been shown in Chinese studies to enhance the production of IL-2. In the United States, IL-2 has been under study as an immune promoting factor since 1983 and has been used for some cancers and for HIV infection, Goji also has the ability to cause the death of tumor calls by inducing apoptosis, a process in which abnormal growth cells are broken down and recycled.

Build strong blood

In one study, the berry caused the blood of older individuals to revert to a markedly younger state. Goji has also been used in a number of recent clinical trials for treatment of bone marrow deficiency conditions.

Fight inflammation and arthritis

Wolfberry can restore the balance of the important anti-inflammatory SOD enzyme.

Improve lymphocyte count

Wolfberry increases lymphocyte count and helps to activate them when the body is under attack.

Improve memory

Wolfberry contains betaine, which is converted in the body into choline, a substance that enhances memory and recall ability.

Support healthy liver function

Wolfberry contains a novel cerebroside that was shown to protect liver cells, even from highly toxic chlorinated hydrocarbons.

Alleviate anxiety and stress

A an adaptogen, wolfberry helps the body adapt and cope with stress.I provides the energy reserves to help you handle just about any difficulty.

Improve digestion

Wolfberry has been used in the treatment of atrophic gastritis, a weakening of digestion caused by reduced activity of stomach cells.
